it happened when a speed boat slammed into the golden gate ferry. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live at the ferry building in san francisco with what we might learn today. good morning, bob. >> reporter: in a few hours the marin county sheriff's office is supposed to release the name of the person that was killed and the other one injured when their pleasure craft crashed into the ferry. next week the coast guard will release their findings. it happened around 4:00 saturday afternoon. 22-foot boat reportedly speeding when it collided with one of the golden gate ferries. the crash happening in a waterway near angel island. two people on that boat were flown to the hospital. one died yesterday. the other is still recovering from their injuries and you should see in the video that the front of the pleasure craft including its windshield was

heavily damaged but the boat was still afloat and did not sink. none of the 500 people onboard the ferry were hurt and the ferry's five crew members have been drug tested and placed on administrative leave pending results of those tests which is standard procedure when you have an accident like this. bob redell, "today in the bay." a spinach recall this morning is affecting 39 states including california. taylor farms announcing it is voluntarily recalling some of the organic baby spinach products due to a possible e. coli contamination. that spinach was sold in 39 states including california. this one was sold under several brand names. the list of those names on your screen to check it out. maybe you have some in your refrigerator. they have a best buy date of february 24t taylor farms says anyone with

this spinach in their refrigerator should simply throw it out. 5:03. in washington, the because is trying to explain itself after someone leaked its never before seen immigration plan. now some lawmakers are convinced that leak wasn't so accidental after all. marla tellez has the latest on the immigration controversy. good morning. >> the leak comes as a small group of democrats and republicans are working behind the scenes on a compromise immigration bill set to be unveiled next month. the details of this much different white house plan were leaked to "usa today" over the weekend. it would immediately protect 11 million illegal immigrants and allow them to become citizens within eight years. it does not, however, guarantee ramped up border security first and foremost which is what republicans want and why they are now so upset over the leaked plan. as you're about to hear, the obama administration says it's nothing more than a backup plan

in case current efforts fall apart. some republicans are not buying it and insist the leak was absolutely intentional. >> this is the president torpedoing his own plan and shows me he's not serious. >> if those do not work out, we'll have an option ready to put out there. >> the gdp says the white house proposal would be dead on arrival if it came up for a vote today. as for that bipartisan bill that a group of eight senators are working on, again that's to be revealed in march. it may not be voted on until summer. coming up in my next report, what a local group fighting for immigration rights has to say about obama's not so secret plan. jon and laura? meteorologist christina loren joins us again and a crisp start to the day but it might be the warmest day of the week, right? >> it's sad when you consider that we're only going to break into upper 50s today. we were so spoiled last week. we were the envy of the nation all weekend long holding onto

smoothly. over here construction through the area. road crews. blocking a lane or two. earlier slowing cleared. they may have moved the crews already even farther north. off 505 there is a crash. no injuries reported. all lanes are open. still watching that transition as folks come in the commute direction. we had to go out to vacaville to find this activity. locally for mass transit. holiday for many businesses and these agencies are noting that. b.a.r.t. saturday schedule. muni saturday schedule. ac transit sunday schedule and caltrans modified scheduled. this is a reason to like this kid even more. colin kaepernick not letting fame go to his head. since that super bowl kaepernick received invitations to go to the grammys and appear on jay leno and asked to be a special correspondent to the oscars.

welcome back, everyone. taking you live to florida this morning where fire crews are battling a fire at a recycling facility in tampa. the fire is in a pile about 30 to 40 feet high. firefighters are actually trying to use a bulldozer to isolate it. they also have moved a tanker full of diesel and several other tanks away from the flames, which is always a good idea. california officials want someone else to flip the bill for fighting wildfires. sacramento bee reports for the last eight years the state has more aggressively gone after business and individuals it blames for starting wildfires. the civil cost recovery program has had so much success that governor jerry brown is asking lawmakers to expand the program. have you heard of the device called the nook? it was supposed to save barnes &

noble. they say instead it's dragging the booik chain down. >> it's fine for reading the book but can't keep up with ipad and appl it will cause a quarter billion dollars in losses over the year. barnes & noble was supposed to report profits tomorrow but will delay that and that's never a good thing. it's not the only company to delay. tesla was supposed to open its books last week before it also unexpectedly called a time-out. the new date is wednesday. key number, how much working capital does tesla have. that's total money on hand. markets are closed. stock markets closed for washington's birthday. the latest medal of honor winner closing the markets on friday.

colder air and showers as we head through tomorrow. today you don't need that umbrella. you may want to take it with you. soupy out there. 37 in gilroy. if you have the day off, it will be perfect for staying indoors and maybe with a book overcast conditions. 7:00 a.m. we stop the clock on future cast. drizzle starting to move along the coastline. not expecting much. stop that clock for you again at 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., maybe an isolated cell moving over the south bay and then heading throughout tomorrow morning, that's when the main front arrives. pretty organized. for us that means we'll get good rainfall totals anywhere in the vicinity of a quarter inch to three-quarter inch. it does look like everybody is going to get a little bit of that rainfall. bulk of the moisture comes through in the heart of your morning drive. keep that in mind. might be a rough one tomorrow but mike and i will be here to guide you through it. 57 degrees in livermore. 57 in san jose. 58 degrees in los gatos. in y new week. new forecast. things will be cooler considering we got close to 80 degrees last friday in places like gilroy.

good morning to you. thanks for joining us. 5:30 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. this morning fire investigators working hard to try to find the cause of an apartment fire that tragically kills a 10-year-old girl over the weekend. carolina godfree was trapped in her apartment building when fire swept through. she was the only one who didn't make it out. last night her mother, friends and neighbors gathering to grieve outside of that apartment building. her mother says she just can't help but feel pangs of guilt for what happened. >> i thought i got all of the kids out. didn't know she was the only one still upstairs and now as a parent i feel bad that i wasn't able to go back in there to get her because they wouldn't let me back in. >> nothing short of heartbreaking there. that fire ultimately left 22 people homeless. the two firefighters that were injured did suffer minor injuries but they are expected to be okay.

5:31. san francisco police releasing a new sketch of a man they say beat up two women in the mission district. two weeks ago a woman walking on bartlett near 23 street passed this man and he reportedly punched her several times and ran off. two weeks before that a woman was beaten to the ground just after walking past that man. police say he slammed her head into the pavement. people we talked to say they are surprised by the attacks. >> the tenderloin and downtown is different. in areas like this or even the mission or i live in hayes valley so it's quieter. there are always people out. you don't think that could happen. >> others say they hasn't heard about the attacks and plan to be more aware in the area. police do not believe robbery or sexual assault was a motive. we've now learned that crash on the bay this weekend between a speed boat and a golden gate ferry was deadly. later this morning sheriffs say they will release new

information about it. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san francisco with what else we might learn today. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the coast guard is running this investigation trying to figure out why this craft was speeding and why it wasn't able to avoid that golden gate ferry when it crashed into it over the weekend. they are supposed to release their findings sometime next week and as you were mentioning the marin county sheriff's office is supposed to release the names of the people killed and other one injured when their crash took place around 4:00 saturday afternoon. it was a 22-foot boat that collided with one of the golden gate ferries on its way to the ferry building in san francisco. the crash happened in raccoon strait. that's a waterway south of tiburon near angel island. two people on the pleasure craft were flown to the hospital. one died yesterday. the other is still recovering from their injuries. i don't know if you can tell in video but most of the damage took place at the front of the

pleasure craft including part of the windshield where the person who was driving the boat would have been standing. the boat itself is still afloat and able to be towed away. none of the 500 people aboard the ferry were hurt. the ferry's five crew members have been drug tested and placed on administrative leave pending results of those tests. that, by the way, is standard operating procedure when you have an accident like this. reporting live here at the ferry terminal in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." all right, bob. thank you very much. change in the forecast. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. it's monday. it's a holiday for some. for some including us it's not. as you make your way out the front door, you want to travel cautiously. we do have thick low clouds out there generating steady drizzle along the peninsula this morning. temperatures aren't that bad. we're in the 40s. a couple 30s out there. mostly 40s to start the day. 42 degrees in san jose. you're at 38 in gilroy this morning. we have a storm on the way

welcome back. a nice shot of san francisco. a live look of the city by the bay. all kinds of lights in the early morning on this holiday. it's president's day. that red, white and blue very appropriate for you as you at home are enjoying a day off. it's 5:40. some sad news out of the country music world. troubled singer mindy mccready dead this morning after an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. the 37 year old's body found yesterday near her home. authorities say she killed herself in the very same place her longtime boyfriend is believed to have committed suicide just weeks ago. mccready had a series of hits during her career including "guys do it all the time" and

"10,000 angels." starting back in 2004, she had a series of personal problems including run ins with the law and several stints in rehab. doctors right now say an autopsy has been planned. olympic athlete oscar pistorius will not compete in any races this year. his agent confirmed late last night he was canceling the races for foreseeable future to focus on murder charges against him. pistorius was charged with murder last thursday after his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, was found shot several times inside his home. he's being held at a police station in the south african capital. steenkamp's funeral is set for tomorrow. president obama's chief of staff says the white house has in fact been working on its very own immigration reform plan. the only reason why the world knows about the secret plan is because it leaked over the weekend. now a lot of republicans are very upset.

"today in the bay's" marla tellez in our newsroom now with more on this immigration controversy. marla, good morning. >> good morning. details of the president's plan were picked up and printed by "usa today" on saturday. now some lawmakers say the leak was no accident. that is president obama's way of influencing the process. the obama administration says it wasn't intentional and calls it nothing more than a backup plan in case current efforts fall apart. the plan calls for immediately protecting 11 million illegal immigrants and allowing them to become citizens within eight years. it does not however guaranteed ramped up border security first and foremost which is what republicans want. it differs from the bipartisan bill that a group of eight senators are currently working on. that group includes senator john mccain. >> does the president really want a result or does he want another way to beat up republicans to get political advantage in the next election?

>> we spoke to an official with a network here in the bay area that is a grassroots faith based organization that supports immigrant rights and reform. that official tells us the way to become a citizen under the president's plan is eight years and is simply too long. he says that an immigration bill should work to keep families together. the gop says the white house proposal would be dead on arrival if it came up for a vote today. as for the bipartisan bill, that's expected to be unveiled next month. >> we'll keep our eye out for that. thank you very much. moving on to spring training now. giants are hard at work already on the field. >> we can also tell you there's a lot going on behind the scenes off the field as well. >> let's head down to scottsdale, arizona, for a look at giants spring training with laurence scott. >> reporter: good morning. long before the giants arrived here at spring training, the clubhouse had everything in place. some of the guys that help put it all together have been with the team for decades. some of the most dedicated folks

happy workweek to you if you are heading off to work this morning temperatures are not that bad and fog is not bad south of the golden gate bridge. fog settles to the surface because we have good wind out there. 38 degrees in gilroy. look at these wind speeds out of the west at 16 miles an hour. in fairfield, 13 miles an hour. right now east-southeast at 6 in san mateo. we're getting offshore winds in san mateo but westerly flow resuming. an indication of that cloud cover pushing in from the pacific as we head throughout the morning hours. i just want to point out where you see white shading is where we do have mostly cloudy conditions. at the surface you have good visibility except for santa rosa right now. half mile available and that's it. 8:00 a.m., look at this. we start to get more of that moisture pushing onshore. may have to use windshield wipers but not for long. drizzle along the peninsula. as we stop the clock at 3:00 p.m., same situation. onshore flow intensifies meaning more low clouds and heavier clouds will create that drizzle.

light volume of traffic as you head down toward 280. no concern here. northbound routes really not showing much of the first burst we see on monday. a lighter flow here. we're looking also toward west 580 and south 680. that's your typical build through the tri-valley. only a little slowing approaching that dublin interchange. a few more cars coming out of the altamont pass. in the 50s. that's easy. through livermore still in the 60s. basically the speed limit. no concern there. a nice drive over toward castro valley y and south 880 which shows slowing now. light right now. at the limit heading toward the san mateo bridge. let's look at the bay bridge across the bay we look at a smooth drive. upper deck into san francisco. lower deck equally as smooth. no backup at the toll plaza. the peninsula south of the dumbarton bridge 101 looks nice. no problems for either direction. right around willow and university. a note that we do have no dumbarton express today. vta through south bay regular schedule. back to you. >> good to know. thanks, mike. 5:48.

a new study out this morning may have you rethinking what your kids watch on tv. researchers found changing the channel from a violent show to an educational one can improve a preschooler's behavior even though you don't decrease the amount of tv they watch. the results were modest but researchers say it could lead to ways to help kids avoid aggressive and violent behavior. researchers say the benefits wain wained over time. 53 pieces of the meteorite were found near a frozen lake. largest piece is only about a centimeter in diameter. treasure hunters on the move there in russia trying to get out there and find pieces and sell a slice of the meteor. we found a supposed piece on ebay right now listed for more than $1,000. guess what? already has 70 bids. meantime, the cleanup continues in the russian city where that

a new study says at least half of all moms say they join facebook to keep tabs on their kids. scott mcgrew, this according to a study from an educational foundation.

>> a foundation with which they are not familiar. it is an interesting idea that many adults join facebook against their will. if that's true, it will make them harder to advertise to. the study created by a college search website called education online says 98% of those parents who were on facebook have friended their own children in order to watch them. ironically antidotal evidence tells us those kids are using facebook less in favor of messaging each other via instagram and posting on tumbler. tesla reports financials on wednesday. elon musk says this year the company will turn a profit. according to a blog all things digital, s drivers made the drive up the east coast. all but two cars made it. one broke down with a software problem. another driver got to new york city and decided to go to a broadway show instead.

good morning, everybody. always a pleasure to have you along. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news in san jose where police are investigating a pursuit that ended in the deadly crash. it all started near capital expressway and towers lane heading near monterey and blossom hill roads in south san jose. that's where "today in the bay's" arturo santiago joins us live. what's the latest details? >> reporter: we're at blossom hill road just on the west side of the 101. this interchange is closed westbound blossom hill road at this interchange. just a few seconds ago they towed away the suspect vehicle and the two tow trucks also drove away. this happened after 11:00 last night. the investigation has continued into the early morning. the suspect in this was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle and tried to run over a san jose police officer. the suspect who was driving the dark colored suv type vehicle crashed and rolled into a ravine near the
